This project is a celebration of the confluence between local tradition and global narratives. By using English newspapers — a symbol of contemporary communication and culture — and integrating them with the ancient craft of basket weaving from Alcongosta, this work reconstructs stories and meanings, intertwining the old and the modern, the local and the global.
The village of Alcongosta, located in the heart of Portugal, has a rich tradition of basketry that transcends generations. This craft, marked by a deep connection with the land and natural resources, finds here a new medium of expression by replacing conventional materials with printed pages that carry voices from around the world.
The result is a functional and artistic object that challenges the perception of materials, time, and space. It is a metaphor for sustainability, by repurposing what would be discarded; for resilience, by reviving traditional techniques; and for intercultural communication, by transforming news into an artifact of identity and memory.
"News" invites the audience to reflect on how local traditions can engage with the challenges and narratives of the modern world, preserving their essence while finding new meanings.
